Havent seen this film in a while but based on what i remember i suppoes you could say that the animals on the boat represents hope for the boy and when everything starts to go badly it begins to link to survival of the fittest, this could then show how the boy needed to then adapt(linking back to how animals adapt) in order to survive. Not sure if this is any help
