People use popular culture today to protest and they did so during the Civil Rights era as well. There were protests songs, poems, books and much cultural involvement in the 60's, all done in order to change the current political and social situation.

People don't have fewer things to protest today than before, on the contrary, many think that the world is in a much worst state than in many previous years due to different challenges and dangers: the climate change, the rise of terrorism and the access to information are some examples of them. People still hold marches and speeches as a form of protest.

The only new thing compared to the Civil Rights era is the use of emails to raise awareness as emails were not known then.
