Senator McCarthy scared the people so much that they almost started accusing each other of being communist supporters. He claimed that anyone could be a communist spy and families even broke apart because some of them who weren't even communists got accused of being communists. Also people would spy on their neighbors and similar things to see whether they were sympathizers of communism.
