Bilingualism arises, spreads, functions as a result of certain socio-historical living conditions of peoples, the main of which are the following: 1) the development of regular economic, political, scientific, cultural, everyday relations between peoples speaking different languages; 2) the territorial contact of one people with another or cohabitation and management in one territory; 3) the social function of each of the languages and the scope of its application in the life of the contacting peoples.
The uniqueness of the linguistic situation in a particular region is determined by various social factors: demographic, ethnic, the specifics of the resettlement of people, their number, religious and historical traditions of the region.
The rich soil of the region was ideal for cotton farming and large plantations developed in the area prior to the Civil War. Soybeans and cattle have since replaced cotton as the dominant crops in the Black Prairie. Cities of the region have grown to become some of the fastest growing in the state economically.
