In 1983 a population of dark-eyed junco birds became established on the campus of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD)

, which is located many miles from the junco's normal habitat in the mixed-coniferous temperate forests in the mountains. Juncos have white outer tail feathers that the males display during aggressive interactions and during courtship displays. Males with more white in their tail are more likely to win aggressive interactions, and females prefer to mate with males with more white in their tails. Females have less white in their tails than do males, and display it less often. Based on the information given above, which of the following types of selection was most likely initially involved in the evolution of white outer tail feathers in juncos?
1. directional selection
2. stabilizing selection
3. disruptive selection
4. sexual selection
5. None of the above

Answer:

Sexual selection

Explanation:

Since males use the white in their tails during courtship to attract females and females prefer males with more white in their tails, there is a clear sexual selection process in which males with more white in their tails will have a greater reproductive success and leave more offspring and this trait will be selected for and each new generation the white in the male's tails will tend to increase.

A young couple went to see a genetic counselor because each had a sibling affected with cystic fibrosis. (Cystic fibrosis is a r
mel-nik [20]

Answer:

a) The correct answer is 1/2 or 0.5

Cystic fibrosis is a recessive disorder and her sibling has a disease but none of the parents had it. Thus, each of the parents must be the carrier of the disease, that is, both of them must be heterzygous.

So, if we cross Cc x Cc, it results in the genotype ratio of 1 (CC) : 2 (Cc) : 1 (cc)

Thus, 2 out of 4 would be the carrier of the disease.

b) 1/16

The probability of female to the carrier is 1/2

Same is the case with male partner due to the probability that he would be the carrier is 1/2

If both are carrier then, there is only 1/4 chances that the offspring will have the disease (as per cross shown above).

Now, the probability that the offspring will have the disease = product of all the above probabilities. (The probability of occurrence of two independent events is equal to the product of their individual probabilities).

So, \frac{1}{2}x\frac{1}{2}x\frac{1}{4} = \frac{1}{16}

c) 1/8

The probability of female to be the carrier is 1/2

The probability male to be the carrier is 1/2

If both are carrier then, there is only 2/4 chances that the offspring will be the carrier of the disease (as per cross shown above).

Now, the probability that the offspring will be the carrier = product of all the above probabilities. (The probability of occurrence of two independent events is equal to the product of their individual probabilities).

\frac{1}{2}x\frac{1}{2}x\frac{2}{4} = \frac{1}{8}

What are the two types of modern wind turbines?
vodomira [7]
<span>There are two types of modern wind turbines. In a Verical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs), the shaft is mounted on a vertical axis perpendicular to the ground. They are aligned with the wind so there’s no adjustment necessary when the wind direction changes. It can’t start moving on itself that is why it needs a boost from its electrical system to get started. It uses wires for support so the rotor elevation is lower. They are less efficient than HAWTs due to its lower elevation. Lower elevation means slower wind due to ground interferences. The other type is Horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWTs), the shaft s mounted horizontally parallel to the ground. It is constantly aligned with the wind using a yaw-adjustment mechanism. This mechanism moves the entire rotor left or right in small increments. It uses a tower to lift the turbine components to an optimum elevation for wind speed and take up very little ground space. It is much more efficient than VAWT. </span>
