Actually, it's the other way around. Genes gather up into chromosomes so that the process of "passing on" of genes during reproduction is easier.

Chromosomes are made of protein and 1 DNA molecule. Chromossomes can take up different shapes and also divide themselves.

No genes make up chromosomes. Chromosomes contain DNA sequences and specific sequences aka genes make specific traits.
