Owls have unique feather colors. One species of owl displays dark brown feathers whereas another owl of the same species has light brown feathers. When a dark feathered owl mates with a light feathered owl all their offspring are mottled with dark and light brown feathers.
Barred Owls are mottled brown and white overall, with dark brown, almost black, eyes. The underparts are mostly marked with vertical brown bars on a white background, while the upper breast is crossed with horizontal brown bars. This may be your answer.
