Answer: C) Not all scientific knowledge begins with an experiment

Explanation:

Fleming's lab was very messy, and one day when he is back from his vacations, he noticed that a colony of a fungus had grown as a contaminant on one of the Petri dishes sown with a bacteria called <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em>. Fleming observed a bacterial lysis, which means the death of the bacteria.

<u>The dishes got contaminated by Penicillium</u>, which is a mold that produces a an antibacterial substance, called penicillin. <u>This is an antibiotic that attacks a wide range of bacteria.</u>

At first, his findings were underestimated and he was not able to isolate this penicillin. But in 1940, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain found out that <u>this antibiotic could be used as a therapeutic agent to fight bacteria.</u>

So, in this case the discovery of penicillin was accidental, without planning a specific experiment.

Explain how proteins are involved in controlling mitosis.
SashulF [63]

Explanation:

Almost all eukaryotic proteins are subject to post-translational modifications during mitosis and cell cycle, and in particular, reversible phosphorylation being a key event. The recent use of high-throughput experimental analyses has revealed that more than 70% of all eukaryotic proteins are regulated by phosphorylation; however, the mechanism of dephosphorylation, counteracting phosphorylation, is relatively unknown. Recent discoveries have shown that many of the protein phosphatases are involved in the temporal and spatial control of mitotic events, such as mitotic entry, mitotic spindle assembly, chromosome architecture changes and cohesion, and mitotic exit. This implies that certain phosphatases are tightly regulated for timely dephosphorylation of key mitotic phosphoproteins and are essential for the control of various mitotic processes. This review describes the physiological and pathological roles of mitotic phosphatases, as well as the versatile role of various protein phosphatases in several mitotic events.

<em>Polymers of amino acids can be both fibrous as well as globular protein. Hemoglobin is a globular but the collagen is the fibrous protein both being the amino acids.</em>

<u>Explanation:</u>

  • <em>Soluble in water: </em>globular protein is soluble in water.
  • <em>intermediate filaments:</em> fibrous protein
  • <em>Insoluble in water:</em> fibrous protein is insoluble in water.
  • <em>function as structural proteins in the cell:</em> fibrous protein.
  • <em>some function as enzymes: </em>globular protein.

Describe how one of the occupations that you studied would use descriptive statistics when performing their job
riadik2000 [5.3K]

Answer:

Given the nature of descriptive statistics, psychologists will use descriptive statistics to assemble data about their clients through their observations of clients' behavioral patterns.  Then a sample of the data will be taken.  The sample is summarized statistically, interpreted, and recorded.  Psychological reports can be issued based on the observed statistical results.

Explanation:

Psychologists and other occupations use descriptive statistics to describe the basic features of the data in their studies or experiments. Descriptive statistics provide simple generalizable summaries about the observed sample and the calculated measures. Using simple graphics, they form the basis of quantitative data analysis.
