Which of the following best describes the relationship between the structure of the cell membrane and its function? The cell mem

brane folds upon itself easily, which facilitates cellular reproduction by mitosis. The membrane is rigid and inflexible preventing the movement of substances across the cell membrane. The outer layer of the membrane is hydrophilic, which allows water to flow in and out of the cell easily to eliminate waste. The proteins that are embedded in the cell membrane act as channels to transport substances in and out of the cell.

The correct answer is D.
The cell membrane is a semi permeable structure, that is, it allows some substances to move to and from the cell but it impedes the movement of other substances. Some proteins are embedded in the membrane of the cell, these serve as carriers for substances which has to enter the cell but which can not pass through the semi permeable membrane of the cell.

Why do phospholipids form a bilayer in water
Gre4nikov [31]
Phospholipids will form a bilayer in water because they contain hydrophobic (Water fearing.. in this cause water "hating") tails and hydrophilic heads (water loving). So they form a bilayer to remove the tails from water likewise, this satisfies the hydrophilic heads because they are still exposed to water.
