Qualitative data deals with the properties or qualities of matter. In qualitative studies, the aim is to understand all about the structure and properties of matter.

Some qualitative methods involve the use of radiation. A typical example of such is the X-ray diffraction. XRD is a qualitative method that can reveal the internal structure of a molecule as well as arrangement of atoms which are not hydrogen.

Also radiation is useful in quantitative measurements such as atomic absorption spectroscopy, spectrophotometry, etc.
