Which excerpt from O’Connor’s "Good Country People" contains an example of irony? Joy was her daughter, a blonde girl who had an

artificial leg. Mrs. Hopewell thought of her as a child though she was thirty-two years old and highly educated. [W]hen she and the girl happened to be out of the house together, she would say something and add the name Hulga to the end of it, and the big spectacled Joy-Hulga would scowl and redden as if her privacy had been intruded upon. She considered the name her personal affair. Nothing is perfect. This was one of Mrs. Hopewell’s favorite sayings. Another was: that is life! And still another, the most important, was: well, other people have their opinions too. Mrs. Hopewell liked to tell people . . . how she had happened to hire the Freemans in the first place and how they were a godsend to her and how she had had them four years. Mark this and return

Answer:

"Nothing is perfect. This was one of Mrs. Hopewell's favorite sayings. Another was: that is life! And still another, the most important, was: well, other people have their opinions too. "

Explanation:

Irony is a literary device used when a character, or even the narration, says the opposite of what I really believe and think. An example of this can be seen in the text shown in the question above, in the lines "Nothing is perfect. This was one of Mrs. Hopewell's favorite sayings. Another was: that is life! And still another, the most important, was: well, other people have their opinions too. "

These lines were spoken by Ms. Hopewell, this is because she says that her daughter should not care what people say or think about the mechanical leg she uses, however Ms. Hopewell herself feels sorry for her daughter and ended up saying something contrary to what I really wanted to say.

Alexxandr [17]

Answer:

The background knowledge that when he was treating humans and kept pets, people stopped coming to him for treatment and he became poor.

Explanation:

While reading the story, Sweet T must have read of the time when Doctor Dolittle was treating humans and kept a lot of pets. People did not like the animals and they soon stopped coming to him for treatments. He began losing money and soon became very poor.

This background knowledge would help Sweet T make the inference that since pet owners were scared of bringing their sick pets to Dr. Dolittle, he would be losing money and would soon become poor again.
