Music can be described as a "universal language" because people of all cultures and backgrounds can understand music and be emotional towards it; whether someone is black or white, muslim or catholic, whatever, they will still be saddened by a sad song and will find joy in a happy song.

ANSWER: Music is also referred to as a 'Universal Language' because it is understood and felt by everyone. To understand music, a person doesn't need to belong from any particular country or caste or religion or class. A joyful music makes everyone happy whereas a sad music will make everyone sad. Composers often take inspiration from music or composers in other part of the world. A music created in USA may also get popular in Japan. That is the power of music.

The term that best completes the statement above would be "aria." It is a part of the opera wherein it expresses the music of the ensemble in such a way that it dictates the tone of the opera. It is usually accompanied by an instrument and it is not necessarily song by the opera singer.
