In the book "To Kill a Mockinbird" Jem´s initial reaction to the gifts on the tree is confusion, since when they told him that there was gum on the tree he initially thinks that the gum is poisoned just because it was close to the Radley´s house, in the end he figures out that the tree was someone´s hidding spot, like a place to hide their treasures.
