He just means that difficulties present opportunities.
FOR EXAMPLE:the difficulty of an unsolved math or science problem,for instance, provide the opportunity to solve the problem.
ANOTHER EXAMPLE:the difficulty of facing another runner provide you an opportunity to break record.

I would say tense and uncomfortable because "it was undoubtedly hot" "he began to sweat" "began to throb in his ears" the sweat and heat makes it very uncomfortable also, the rumbling and throbbing sound makes it tense.
