What is the difference between a metaphor and a symbol

English
1 answer:
Ahat [919]3 years ago

A metaphor does not need to use like or as. A metaphor typically says one thing is another thing, but doesn’t always suggest that they are the same thing. Symbolism is similar to metaphor, but symbolism is usually implied, while metaphor is explicit. For example, “Juliet is the sun” is a metaphor, but not a symbol, while heavy rain could be a reference to Noah’s Ark and be a symbol of cleansing. In the second case, the comparison is not stated, but is implied.
Based on these definitions, B and C are definitely wrong, but neither A or D is completely right. I’d still say that D is the best answer though.

Why does Thoreau believe that a government based on majority rule cannot be based on justice?
zheka24 [161]

The correct answer is the following: option c. Thoreau believes that a government based on a majority rule cannot be based on justice because they determine what is right based on the strength in their numbers rather than the conscience.

Thoreau main idea is that "the government is best which governs least". Indeed he said that one day men would be able to have a government that does not govern at all. He also argues that democracies, by answering to majorities, are answering to the strongest group, not the most thoughtful, therefore that type of government cannot be based on justice, as not because the government is the strongest group does that means that it possesses more consciousness than the rest of the citizens.
