Your answer would be:

They did not. They thought of themselves as 13 separate groups, who combined their efforts for a common cause. At no time did they think of themselves giving up what we now call (and rarely see or acknowledge as) states rights. Since they came from many diverse backgrounds, ethnicities and religious orientations, they valued their independence and created a constitution that left the majority of the power to the individual states rather than the central government.
