Weathering is the breakdown of rocks by the forces of the atmosphere including due to rainwater and snow melt, heating up as in a desert and freezing and thawing, and oxidation of minerals such as iron-bearing minerals. Altered rocks tend to break down faster than fresh pristine rocks ie rocks subjected to hydrothermal alteration during the formation of some porphyry copper mines can already be clay-rich so if left on, say a mine dump can break down to soil within a few years. Minerals formed at high temperatures deep within the earth when exposed to the much lower temperatures of the atmosphere especially feldspars tend to alter to clay and if this is intense enough the result can be a very crumbly rock well on its way to be a soil,.Alternate freezing and thawing can produce cracking of the rock which allow water to percolate into the rock and combine with the minerals and promote weathering. Also near the surface, iron bearing minerals can oxidize significantly and render the rock softer.

Please may I have help with this question.<br> Thank you
Taya2010 [7]

Answer:

The economic effects were more significant than the social effects.

Explanation:

The social effects included the flooding of over 600 houses and the evacuation of 16 farms. Villages, such as Borrowbridge,  were cut off, and power supplies, roads, and railways were also affected. The Bristol to Taunton line was closed at Bridgwater for instance. The environmental impacts were even worse though; an enormous volume of debris dumped by the floodwaters had to be cleaned up and stagnant waters had to be re-oxygenated before being pumped back into rivers. However, I think the worse impact of all was the contamination of all flooded areas by oil, agricultural chemicals, livestock effluent, and human sewage. I think that this is the worst impact because of its potential for causing harm to humans and other animals.

In conclusion, I think that the socio-economic and environmental effects of this flood were both important but that the environmental effect was more important, because of the potential to cause harm.
