A trinomial is a perfect square trinomial if it can be factored into a binomial multiplied to itself. (This is the part where you are moving the other way). In a perfect square trinomial, two of your terms will be perfect squares.

When adding a positive number with a negative number you will act as if you are subtracting the two numbers, then take the sign of the largest number (disregarding the signs). In this case the largest number is 40 and its sign is positive. Your answer will have a positive sign.
40 + (-11) = 29
