Avoidance is a natural resistance to the ordeal. It is normal to want to avoid imagining regarding or feeling sentiments concerning a stressful experience. But when avoidance is intense, or if it's the main method you cope, it can intervene with your sensitive rehabilitation and healing.
I would say negotiation. Engaging and accepting just makes it seem like you're willing to do it just for your friends. Avoiding (could be a choice but it) makes it seem like you don't want to hang out with them.
