2x = 1/2 is an entirely different problem; its solution is x = 1/4.

You are to solve   2^x = 1/2.

Note that 1/2 = --------,   so 1/2 = -------- = 2^x

Multiplying both sides by 2, we get   1 = 2(2^x)   =  (2^1)(2^x) = 2^(x+1)

Take the log to the base 2 of both sides of     1 = 2^(x+1).  The result is
