Answer: by connecting the idea of new beginnings to the desire to make pilgrimages.

The prologue of The Canterbury Tales begins with a detailed description of spring. The author celebrates the beauty, vitality and richness of spring. The spring is a perfect time for a pilgrimage. A pilgrimage is a journey undertaken for penance. In this case, the pilgrims are travelling to visit the remains of the archbishop of Canterbury, Saint Thomas Becket. The pilgrimage, just like spring, represents a new beginning.
