The desire for total control and power that Dionysius has is what gives rise to the plot. Because of this desire, Dionysius is a tyrant who often abuses his power. Moreover, he does not let anyone criticize him and he is hot-tempered and imperious. This attitude is what leads him to condemn Pythias to death for complaining against him. It is also what leads Damon to be willing to give his life for his friend.
