I think you can break down the document into three major ideas very easiliy:

All men are created equal.
Therefore, no men are wise enough to rule over other men without their consent. The way to resolve this paradoxical situation is through liberal democratic instutitions that combine majority rule with the right of the minority to express itself.
The English government (personified as King George III) had shown an unwillingness to extend these rights to American colonists — even though (1) above implies that colonists ought to have no fewer rights than Englishmen.

Sun Yat Sen has three main principles, Nationalism, Democracy and Social Welfare or "Government for the People". 

He led the uprising against the Qing Dynasty where he applied his principles on nationalism. He had this ideology that the people should come together to help each other grow and help the country grow. This paved way for his plans on founding the Republic of China.

I think it was the Age of Discovery.  After the Crusades and the fall of Feudalism, the growth of towns and commerce attracted interest in other lands that began during the Crusades when they were exposed the silks and spices being traded there.  This prompted European powers to embark on journeys to establish trade routes as well as find new lands to colonize.
