Gavin likes biking. He never misses a chance to go for a ride when the weather is nice. This week his goal is to bike about 65 t

otal miles over four days. Each day, he wants to ride 1.5 times as far as he rode the day before. How far should he ride on each of the four days to reach his goal? If x is the number of miles Gavin bikes on the first day, write an expression for the distance he should bike on each of the following three days

Answer:

How far should he ride on each of the four days to reach his goal?

1st day: 8 miles

2nd day: 12 miles

3rd day: 18 miles

4th day: 27 miles

Step-by-step explanation: As the problem says, x is the number of miles he rides on the first day. Let's start off with that.

1st day: x miles

He want to ride 1.5 times as far as he rode the day before... no 1.5 more, but 1.5 times as far as he rode the day before; you would multiply 1.5 with the previous day's length.

2nd day: 1.5x

Then you multiply 1.5 to 1.5x to get the third day's.

3rd day: 2.25x

4th day: 3.375x

----------------------------

Phew! Gavin wants to ride a total of 65 miles over these four days, so if Gavin added all the miles of the four days, he should get 65...

1st+2nd+3rd+4th=65

x+1.5x+2.25x+3.375x=65

8.125x=65

\frac{8.125x}{8.125}=\frac{65}{8.125}

x=8

Yes! Now that we've got the hard part done... substitute 8 for ever single x.

1st day: 8 miles

2nd day: 1.5(8)=12 miles

3rd day: 2.25(8)=18 miles

4th day: 3.375(8)=27 miles

-------------------------

Checking my answer:

Just add the miles!

8+12+18+27=65

65=65

✓

-----------------------

Hope that helps! :D

Which terms could be used as the first term of the expression below to create a polynomial with a degree of 5 written in standar
Orlov [11]

Answer:

From the given monomials we have that 5x^4y is the first term of the expression below to create a polynomial with a degree of 5 written in standard form.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given expressions are 2x^2y^2,-3xy^3,-4x^3y^2,x^3,8.4x^4y^2,5x^4y,-xy^3

To find the first term of the expression below to create a polynomial with a degree of 5 written in standard form :

 • From the given expressions we notice that they are monomials because it has one term only.

From the monomials we have that 5x^4y is the first term of the expression below to create a polynomial with a degree of 5 written in standard form

 • While other expressions exceeds degree 5 or less than the degree 5 so we take only this expression 5x^4y
 • When we add the powers we get 4+1=5
 • Therefore the degree of the polynomial is 5

What number should be added to both sides of the equation to complete the square?
x2 - 6x = 5
ikadub [295]

Answer:

First of all, it is better to note that x2 is not equal to x² .In mathematics x2 is equal to 2nd x or 2x i.e. 2 times x=2*x=x*2.

I don't know what this question means ! But if it means to just confine x2 and -6x in a square or to make them part of a square then it could be done as follows.

Assume x2 as x² as per your needs as case may be.

Now use the identity

(a² - 2a×b + b²) =(a - b )²

Here , in LHS

a appears twice as in a² and in 2a×b.

So for given expression (x2 – 6x = 5) or (x² – 6x = 5) or (x² - 6x -5 =0)

Assume x=a

Then,

6x =2*x*3 =2*a*b

=> 3 = b

Thus

(x² - 6x -5 =0)

=> x² - 2*x*3 + 3² -3² -5 =0

=> ( x² - 2*x*3 + 3² ) - 3² -5 =0

=> (x - 3)² - 3² = 5

=> (x - 3)² = 5 + 3²

=> (x - 3)² = 5 + 9 = 14 = ( ±√(14) )²

Now comparing

(x² – 6x = 5) and (x - 3)² = 5 + 9,

it can be said that number 9 should be added to both sides of (x² – 6x = 5) or (x² – 6x) = ( 5 ) to make ( x² ) and (-6x ) as the constituting parts of the square (x-3)² .

I hope it helps.

Thank you for patiently reading it.

A bag contains 135 marbles some white and some transparent. The ratio of white marbles to transparent ones is 3 : 6. How many wh
Setler [38]

Answer:

Number of white marbles in the bag = 45

Step-by-step explanation:

Total number of marbles in the bag = 135

Ratio of white marble to transparent ones = 3 : 6

Let number of white marbles be =3k

Then number of transparent marble will be =6k

Total number of marbles will be =3k+6k=9k

So we have.

9k=135

Dividing both sides by 9.

\frac{9k}{9}=\frac{135}{9}

∴ k=15

∴ Number of white marbles in the bag = 3k=3\times15 = 45
