The sum of two numbers is 65 and the difference is 13.what are the numbers?

Mathematics
1 answer:
Karolina [17]4 years ago
3 0

Answer: 26 and 39

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the numbers be x and y . Also , let us take x as the larger number.

From the first statement :

x + y = 65 ...................... equation 1

From the second statement :

x - y = 13 ....................... equation 2

Solving the system of linear equation by elimination method. Let us eliminate y first , then we need to add the two equations to eliminate y , the equation then becomes

2x = 78

x =39

substitute x = 39 into equation 1 , that is

39 + y = 65

y = 65 - 39

y = 26

Therefore , the numbers are 26 and 39

Suppose y is inversely proportional to x. When x=20, then y=4. Find y when x=35.
Ierofanga [76]
~ : to represent sign of proportionality
y ~ 1/x
y = k/x
x=20, y=4
4 = k/20
k = (20×4) = 80
y = 80/x
x=35, y = 80/35 = 2.29
The proportional constant k = 80
The function is: y = k/x
The new value of y is: 2.29

Hope it helped!

Mr. Jones sold two pipes at $1.20 each. Based on the cost, his profit was 20% and his loss on the other was 20%. On the sale of
madam [21]

Answer:

Selling price of the first pipe = $1.20

Profit = 20%

Let’s try to find the cost price of the first pipe

CP = Selling price - Profit

CP = 1.20 - 20% of CP

CP = 1.20 - 0.20CP

CP + 0.20CP = 1.20

1.20CP = 1.20

CP = 1.201.20

CP = $ 1

Selling price of the Second pipe = $1.20

Loss = 20%

Let’s try to find the cost price of the second pipe

CP = Selling price + Loss

CP = 1.20 + 20% of CP

CP = 1.20 + 0.20CP

CP - 0.20CP = 1.20

0.80CP = 1.20

CP = 1.200.80

CP = $1.50

Therefore, total cost price of the two pipes = $1.00 + $1.50 = $2.50

And total selling price of the two pipes = $1.20 + $1.20 = $2.40

Loss = $2.50 – $2.40 = $0.10

Therefore, Mr. Jones loss 10 cents.

i know that this is hard to understand so tell me if you need help

Have a great day :)
