The Peace of Augsburg temporary treaty, signed by Charles V in 1555, ended the Thirty Years' War,which was a set of wars between German Lutherans and Catholics in the fragmented <u>Holy Roman Empire between 1618 and 1648. </u>
The settlement allowed princes in the Holy Roman Empire to choose which religion would prevail in their domains: either Lutheranism or Catholicism. The members of the society that refused to agree with prince’s choice were given the opportunity to freely emigrate to different regions in which their desired religion had been accepted.
