The plumule. Most monocots grow through hypogeal germination meaning that the growth of the plumule happens beginning from below the soil and the cotyledons remain below the soil. Opposite of hypogeal is epigeal germination where the growth of the plumule only occurs when the cotyledons have emerged above the soil.

Germination is described as the process by which an organism buds or grows after being planted. The primary leaf or the developing shoot is basically coated with coleoptile. This substance helps protect the shoot from any damage it may incur. During the early time of germination, the cotyledon<span> of a plant can't be seen above the soil. </span>
