In industrial cities there were better chance at getting a job.  The ethnic neighborhoods were crowded and dirty.  Most immigrants lived in areas where other immigrants from the same country emmigrated from.  So you had little Italy, Polish Communities, etc.

Also, the Dalai Lama is considered as the spiritual leader of the Gelug Buddhism and he is the highest religious authority, which over time even became a political authority. This sect of Buddhism has become dominant in Tibet and Mongolia.
