2x - 2y = -4

2x-2y=-4
Multiply eq.by 3
6x-6y=-12
-3x-3y=0
Multiply eq.by 2
-6x-6y=0
from both new eq.
6x-6y=-12
-6x-6y=0
So adding both eq. We get
-12y=-12
So y=1
From eq.1
2x-2y=-4
2x-2(1)=-4
2x-2=-4
2x=-4+2
2x=-2
x=-1
so x=-1 and y=1

The sum of two numbers is 153. if four times the smaller number is subtracted from the larger number, the result is 18. find th
sleet_krkn [62]
X = larger number and y = smaller number

x + y = 153....x = 153 - y
x - 4y = 18

153 - y - 4y = 18
153 - 5y = 18
-5y = 18 - 153
-5y = -135
y = -135/-5
y = 27 <=== smaller number

x - 4y = 18
x - 4(27) = 18
x - 108 = 18
x = 18 + 108
x = 126 <== larger number

How are the coordinates of the extreme value and the equation from part B in the form y=(x-h)^2-c related.
True [87]

The extreme value of y = (x - h)² - c is the vertex of the equation.

<h3>What are extreme values of a function?</h3>

The extreme values of a function are either the maximum or minimum values of the function.

<h3>The equation of a parabola in vertex form</h3>

The equation of a parabola in vertex form with vertex (h', k) is given by

y = a(x - h')² + k and its extreme values are

  • if a > 0  (h', k) is a minimum point and
  • if a < 0 (h', k) is a maximum point.

Since y = (x - h)² - c is the equation of a parabola in vertex form, comparing with y = a(x - h')² + k,

  • h = h'
  • -c = k and
  • a = 1.

So, the cooordinates of the vertex of y = (x - h)² - c is (h, -c).

Now, since a = 1 > 0, (h, -c) is a minimum point.

So, the extreme value of y = (x - h)² - c is the vertex of the equation.
