Erikson claimed that when children fail to resolve crises in the first few stages of development- due to negligent, harsh or abusive parents and negative environments- they are unable to deal with crises as adults. As adults, they are frequently anxious, insecure and mistrustful of people, often encountering problems in their relationships. </span><span> </span>
