Discussing the Tom Robinson case with Uncle Jack, Atticus refers to “Maycomb’s usual disease.” What does he mean?

Answer: Atticus means that people in Maycomb have racial prejudices towards black men.

Explanation:

To Kill a Mockingbird is Harper Lee's coming-of-age novel and a classic of modern American literature. Published in 1960, the novel is set in the fictional town of Maycomb.

In Chapter 8, Atticus, who defends a black man called Tom Robinson, discusses his case with Uncle Jack. When he refers to Maycomb's 'usual disease', Atticus is actually talking about the prejudices against black people. He is aware that the town criticizes him for defending Tom. The people are convinced that Tom is guilty and has to pay the price. Atticus is hoping that his children would not catch this 'disease', or, in other words, that they will not develop these prejudices.

Why doesn’t he suffer from it?

Answer: Atticus is a rare example of a man who shows understanding for other people, regardless of whether they deserve it or not.

Explanation:

Throughout the book, Atticus shows that he is different from the majority of people in Maycomb. Not only does he have understanding for black people, but he also understands other people who do not even deserve his sympathy. For instance, in Chapter 23, when Bob Ewell threatens him and spits in his face, Atticus understands his feelings and does not blame him for this reaction. Simply put, Atticus is full of compassion and does not judge other people. Moreover, his aim is to teach his children to follow in his footsteps.
