Martina is currently 16 years older than her cousin Joey. In 5 years she will be 3 times as old as Joey. Use this information to

answer the following questions. If you let x represent Joey’s current age, what expression can you use to represent Martina’s current age? Based on your answer to part a, what expression represents Joey’s age in 5 years? What expression represents Martina’s age in 5 years? What equation can you write based on the information given? What is Joey’s current age? What is Martina’s current age?

<span>m = j + 16
m + 5 = 3j
---
put the system of linear equations into standard form
---
m - j = 16
m - 3j = -5
---
x - y = 16
x - 3y = -5

so now that you have your equations formed, just solve.

x - y = 16 , which means that x = y + 16
substitute for x in the second equation :

Hope this helps

M=martina's age now
x=joe's age now

m is 16 older than x means
m=16+x

in 5 years (m+5 and x+5) she will be 3 times as old a joey
m+5=3(x+5)

so
we have
m=16+x
m+5=3(x+5)

a.
m=16+x

b.
x+5
m+5

c.
m=16+x
m+5=3(x+5)

d.
solving
sub 16+x for m
16+x+5=3(x+5)
distribute and add like terms
21+x=3x+15
minus x both sides
21=2x+15
minus 15 both sides
6=2x
divide by 2
3=x

m=16+x
m=16+3
m=19

joey is 3 and martina is 19

Which equation represents a parabola opening to the right with a vertex at the origin and focus at (9,0) A. X = - 1/36y^2 B. X =
Virty [35]

Answer:

Option C: x = (1/36)*y^2

Step-by-step explanation:

A horizontal parabola is written as

x = f(y) =  a*y^2 + b*y + c

If a is positive, the parabola opens to the right.

if a is negative, the parabola opens to the left.

And the vertex of the parabola has the y-value:

y = -b/2a

and the x value

x = f(-b/2a)

For our parabola, we know that:

Opens to the right:

Then the only options left are:

C) x = (1/36)*y^2

D) x = (1/6)*y^2

Because in both cases b = 0, both of the equations have the vertex in the point (0, 0).

Now let's see wich one has a focus at (9, 0)

If the vertex of our equation is:

(h, k)

Then the focus will be:

(h + a, k)

Where a is the directrix of the equation.

Here we know that the vertex is (0, 0) and the focus is (9, 0)

Then:

(0 + a, 0) = (9, 0)

The directrix is 9.

And the directrix is such that:

(x - h)^2 = 4*a*(y - k)

Replacing the values of h and k (both are zero) we get:

x^2 = 4*a*y

And we know that: a = 9

x^2 = 4*9*y

x^2 = 36*y

if we isolate y, we get:

(1/36)*x^2 = y

This is option C.

Then the correct option is C.

Express the ratio of 300 miles to 25 gallons of gasoline as a unit rate. Simplify your answer. Show your work
Alchen [17]

Answer:

1 gallon to 12 miles

Step-by-step explanation:

Distance = 300 miles

Gasoline used = 25 gallons

Expressing as a unit rate :

Distance covered per gallon of gasoline :

Distance / gasoline used

300 / 25

12 miles

Hence, the unit rate is :

1 gallon of gasoline = 12 miles

1 gallon of gasoline will cover 12 miles in distance.
