I strongly recommend that you find an illustration of an ellipse that features the three distances a, b and c. You could Google "ellipse" and sort through the various illustrations that result, until you find the "right one."

There is an equation that relates a, b and c for an ellipse. It is a^2 = b^2 + c^2.

a is relatively easy to find. It is the distance from the center (0,0) of your ellipse to the right-hand vertex (20,0). So a = 20.

b is the distance from the center (0,0) of your ellipse to the right-hand focus (16,0). So b = 16. You could stop here, as it was your job to find b.

Or you could continue and find a also. a^2 =b^2 + c^2, so

here    a^2 = 16^2 + 20^2.  Solve this for a.

Hi there!

We can use right-triangle trigonometry to solve.

We are given the HYPOTENUSE and ADJACENT sides, so we must use cosine in this instance.

cosθ = Adjacent/Hypotenuse

We can plug in what is given:

cos(28) = A/17

Solve for 'A':

17cos(28) = 15.01 ft

The base change property can help in what type of scenarios? HELP ME!!!!!
Mekhanik [1.2K]

Base Change Property

The Base Change Property is very helpful in scenarios related to simplifying equations where the logarithmic terms have a varying base.

So to solve an equation, which possesses logarithmic functions, all logarithmic terms must have a similar base.

What is  Base Change Property?

This refers to the base formula which is used to write a logarithm of a number with a base that is fixed as the ratio of two logarithms both having the same base but different from the base of the initial or original logarithm.

Change of Base Formula is given as:

log_{b}  a = \frac{Log_{c} a }{Log_{c} b}

See the link below for more about Base Change Property:
