"An officer of the Federal force, who in a spirit of adventure or in quest of knowledge had left the hidden bivouac in the valle

y, and with aimless feet had made his way to the lower edge of a small open space near the foot of the cliff, was considering what he had to gain by pushing his exploration further."
The description of the officer's spirit of adventure foreshadows

A.) that he will lie to the union commander.

B.) that he will seriously injure himself upon falling.

C.) that he will be the only observer of the horseman's fall.

D.) that he will question Carter's part in the strange incident.

Answer: I would contend that the right answer is the C) that he will be the only observer of the horseman's fall.

Explanation: Just to elaborate a little on the answer, it can be added that by making his way "with aimless feet" and "pushing his exploration further," the officer had the potential chance of witnessing something unexpected and adventurous. And this he did, when he saw the horseman in the sky. He did hurt himself in his shin when he saw the man on horseback riding through the air, but not seriously, and this description of his spirit of adventure does not necessarily suggest that he will lie to the commander.

Which of the following responsibilities of citizenship allows an exception for religious reasons?
julsineya [31]

The answer is (D) taking up arms to defend the nation exempts a person from religious reasons.

In all the other three cases anybody would be eligible to do so as a citizen.

But taking up arms to defend the nation not only needs mental courage and physical strength but also some motivation to represent the entire nation. Therefore, those taking up arms to defend their nation would be doing some service which is what religion aims at. They are both one and the same serving people in general or serving people during crisis (D). This social service by taking the arms to defend the nation coincides with the goal of Religion.
