The simple reason was because the British needed to pay their debts from the Seven Years' War (The French and Indian War) so they taxed the colonies.

Parliament raised taxes on the American colonies in the 1760's because Britain was in debt from the French and Indian War.

In 1763, the British government came from the Seven Years’ War which involved the French and Indian by heavy debts and needed money to pay this debt. The king and the parliament believed they had the power to tax the colonies and they imposed taxes to the colonies which included the Stamp Act and  Townsend Acts.
