Why did Athens need to trade with other city-states and colonies, and what products did they trade?

Athens depended on trading.
If they did not trade, their economy would fall apart. 
Athens traded things like ships, coins, art (pottery), food and metals like iron and silver.

Answer:

The Athenians needed trading with other city-states and colonies to flourish their economy. Athens surrounded by sea with less fertile land. Unable them to provide enough food for their citizens, led in depending on trade. Athens became one of the traders in the Mediterranean region. Athens traded olive oil, silver,honey, and pottery.
