The prefixes relate to the number of any given basic unit.
Take weight for example.
You have grams, which is one single gram. Then there's kilograms, which are 1,000 grams.
Same with mass (volume of a liquid.)
It takes 1,000 mililiters to equal 1 liter.

For example  

Second is the base unit of time (as per the MKS system)

If we add prefix “mili” the unit of time will become millisecond and this signifies a unit which is smaller than second as

1 second = 1000 milisecond

Like wise there are other prefixes such as micro, nano etc.
