In the 1830s and 1840s, Mexico controlled California, taking authority over their land and trading among other things. Prior to Mexico, California was controlled by Spain, which ended after the Mexican War for Independence that occured in 1821. California gained independence from Mexico in 1846 after the United States won in a war against Mexico.
