Federalism refers to the sharing of power between state and national governments. Federalism is the division of power between two separate governmental authorities, the nation, and the states. In creating numerous governments on many levels, federalism increases the ability of the masses to participate by voting and holding office.

The founders believed that the dispersing of power among different sets of leaders (national, state, and local) would offer more protection from tyranny. It also helps party competition.
