The legislature is the United States Congress. This is a bicameral legislature, which means that it has two separate chambers: the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Both the senators and the representatives are chosen through direct election. The representatives are elected by the people of a particular constituency (or district) apportioned to states by population and serve for two years. The senators, on the other hand, are independent of population size. Instead, two senators are appointed per state.
