Alvin York, or Sergeant York, was drafted into World War I and initially objected to military service as a conscientious objector. This meant he believed, for religious reasons, that he should not participate in violence. Convinced by his commander that military service was in line with Christian beliefs, York went on to fight in the war. His service in the war would earn him advances in title and medals, the most notable being the Medal of Honor. <span />
