Endosymbiotic theory explains that the eukaryotes and the prokaryotes have the same ancestor. It explains their theory on the basis of mitochondria and chloroplast structure.

Further Explanation:

The endosymbiotic theory explains that the life comes to light on earth nearly around four billion years ago. It also states that both prokaryotes and eukaryotes share the same ancestor. It might be possible that the first eukaryote is amoeba-like cells that obtain their food through phagocytosis. It is said that these organisms have ingested the prokaryotic cells that may have survived within the organism. It results in developing a symbiotic relationship.

The mitochondria were formed or developed at the time when the organism ingests the microbe which is capable of cellular or aerobic respiration. The chloroplast was developed or formed when the bacteria which are capable of photosynthesis were ingested. They may have eventually lost their cell wall and a certain part of their DNA because there was no use of it. Mitochondria and chloroplast are not able to grow outside the host cell. They have their own DNA that is circular in structure and they also possess their own ribosomes.

Mitochrondria of the eukaryotic cells.
As many researchers hypothesize that the old single-celled organism or the origin of the complex-celled organisms came from the endosymbiosis of the mitochrondrion organism and the prokaryotic cell. It has been said that mitochondria was an independent organism which then to have been evovled itself after planting itself inside a prokaryotic cell which aided cellular respiration and production of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate). This then aided the prokaryotic cell to be more sophisticated and caused another change from having without a true nucleus to a eukaryotic cell with a nucleus and embedded DNA.
