I believe the answer is a = 17.
My work is below, I hope this helps.

2(23 + a) = 34
Distributive Property
26 + 2a = 34
Subtract 26 from both sides
2a = 8
Divide both sides by the coefficient
2a/2 = 34/2
a = 17

46 + 2a = 34
subtract 46 from each side
2a = -12
divide by 2
a = -6
