Often the only skills a freed slave had was in farming and even then they usually only knew how to do the manual labor, not the actual running of a farm.
Freed slaves had no money, clothing, etc.
It is considered the first decade of the modern era because it made a big change move from farming cultures toward capitalism, industrialization, secularization, rationalization, and the nation-state.

typically lived better than of the field slaves. They generally
had better food and
were occasionally given the family's cast-off or used clothing. They slept in
cellars, garrets, and hallway in great houses.
