Given the point of view from the outside, the cultures and experiences described are considered absurd. In 1956, anthropologist Horace Minor published an article in the American Journal of Anthropology titled "Body Ritual among the Nacirema".

The Nacirema were charming people who tended to have eccentric habits. But the Nacirema were no strange tribe from a faraway land. Minor's account of Nacirema, was a sharp criticism of anthropologists' tendency to hype the weirdness of other cultures.
