The historical figure that played a major role in the Israeli independence movement and later went on to promote Jewish immigration to Israel as Prime Minister is Golda Meir.

Golda Meir (1888-1978) was a Jewish diplomat that supported the Zionist movement and became the first woman to be appointed Primer Minister of Israel. She was born in Ukraine but moved to the United States in 1905. In 1924 she returned to Jerusalem and actively participated in the Zionist movement. In 1969 she became the Primer Minister of his country after the death of Israel leader Levi Eshkol.
