The separate system is a type of prison administration that is based on the concept of isolating inmates in solitary confinement.

Elizabeth started advocating for gender segregation, female matrons for female inmates, schooling and jobs (often knitting and sewing), and religious instruction.

The most recently developed philosophy of punishment is that of recovery, which holds that the object of punishment is to provide the criminal with care and instruction so that he is capable of contributing to society and serving as a law-abiding member of the community.

what does quindlen mean when she describes america as being like the crazy quilts that have been one of its great folk art forms
Luba_88 [7]
She means that there were various different aspects that don't usually belong together and don't really fit, but they fit together in the end and managed to build a society that works, like a quilt that consists of many various patches that are disjunctive, but together they build a great quilt.

IrinaK [193]
Because the age of exploration required cross-atlantic travels, innovations were needed to make the traveling process quicker and more efficient. Beginning, ships at this time became faster, more maneuverable, and more reliable in terms of strength which made them easier to use to travel to faraway lands; an example of these ships would be the galleon or the caravel. Next, the compass was created (almost like the first form of gps) to keep track of longitude and latitude/location;this device made it easy to record speed, distance, and direction over a set period of time. Additionally, the creation of the astrolabe also helped sailors to record distance and location by using the distance of sun and stars above the horizon. Overall, the Age of Exploration would allow sailors to map new coastlines and for the exchange of technology and resources across the globe.

According to the article, what “new element which had not been evident in the Palestinian terrorism of two or three decades earl
NISA [10]

The element that had not been evident in the Palestinian terrorism until the 1970s was its connections with Islamic religious extremism.

Until then, it was believed that the actions carried out by the Palestinians had only political (anti-Israel) motives. But from that moment, it was found that not only were political reasons behind their attacks, but also religious ones (appearance of groups such as Al-Jihad, connections with Hamas in Lebanon).
