Trade was a way for cultures to not only obtain goods and resources that they needed and didn't have on their own, but was also a method of "cultural diffusion," which basically means that they learned about and adopted other cultural traits and ideas ... they learned about different religions and foods and government systems from the cultures that they came into contact with.
