Natural selection is the mechanism by which organisms that have inherited beneficial traits are more likely to survive and undergo successful reproduction, meaning that variation is passed on to the next generation.

For example, in a species that suffers from overpopulation, organisms will likely have to compete for food and might struggle to survive. However, if a random change in the DNA sequence occurs, it could provide a beneficial effect to an organism that makes it more likely to find food and outcompete others. This makes that individual more likely to survive and reach mating age. This inheritable variation could then be passed on to that individual's offspring.
