Secondary succession is a type of ecological succession which occurs on a pre-existing soil.

It starts from the events like forest fires, hurricanes, tsunami et cetera.  

These events drastically reduce the populations of the already established ecosystem of the area.  

However, it may not eliminate the entire population and some plants and animals may survive the disturbing event.

The left-over population, presence of soil, and seeds and underground vegetative organs of plants such as roots make the foundation for the secondary succession to occur.
